Ghosts, rare lines, extreme avalanches, eating and more

For many reasons, growing up in Jackson Hole must be a wild experience. Chiefly among them is getting to ski some of the gnarliest terrain in the lower 48. Tucker Carr and his buddies Luke and Wyatt Gentry were born and raised in the shadow of the Tetons and their skiing reflects that. Check out Crew 22's absolute send fest from last season from zones near home and a few trips up north.

1/17/24 - This week’s stoke:

What we’re watching:

  • Ghost Resorts: Japan - We're big fans of most things sweetgrass productions put together. In this video series from black crows, they explore the ski resorts that were left in antiquity. This episode offers a glimpse into the Japanese ski culture of the past and the powder that some still chase.

  • Teton Brown on Shirleys - If you've skied Jackson Hole you've seen Cody peak. The east face Cody is called Shirley’s and taunts skiers with its perfect powder turns up tops guarded by a seemingly unskiable cliff section in the middle. Here we get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to make one of the few descents of Shirley’s

The Beta:

  • Inbounds avalanche kills 1 at Palisades-Tahoe - An inbounds avalanche occurred at Palasides Tahoe last week. It slid in the GS gully near the KT-22 lift. One skier was killed and a second was injured.

  • Extreme Avalanche Black Rose issue in Utah - Snow has returned in full force to the Intermountain West. Unfortunately, the snow fell on a historically weak snowpack. After a nearly month-long dry spell, the surface of the snow contained a thick layer of facets before these storms fell on. In Utah, these lead forecasters to issue a rare Extreme rating on all aspects at all elevations

  • Fatal Avalanches in Idaho and Wyoming - The extreme avalanche conditions have unfortunately led to 2 deaths already. The involved 2 skiers in the Star Valley area where 1st skier triggered a slide that swept him through brush and trees into a gully. The second skier uncovered him within 15 minutes but the skier died from trauma. The second occurred in the Idaho panhandle where 3 were caught and 1 was killed.

Elevating the Craft:

  • Nutritional Demands of Ski Touring - Ski touring demands meticulous nutrition planning for both performance and safety - it's as crucial as having the right gear. Nutritionist and ski instructor Jackson Long teaches us key strategies to fuel our bodies effectively. Use carbohydrates and fats, introduce fats slowly, and don't overlook the importance of hydration, especially in cold, high-altitude conditions. Pack a variety of snacks, balancing weight and nutritional value. Remember, good nutrition not only boosts performance but is vital for safety and decision-making.
