Hypocrisy, Bootfitting, and Candide Takes a Tumble
Winter sports athletes are Hypocrites, and we should know it. In the context of climate advocacy, TGR's latest short examines the inherent contradiction between personal actions and systemic efforts - especially when it comes to burning fossil fuels to access skiing. Featuring: Amie Engerbretson, Jeremy Jones, Naomi Oreskes, Auden Schendler, Griffin Post, Todd Ligare, Leanne Pelosi, Nadine Overwater, Ducan Lee, Marie-France Roy, Austin Smith, Jude Bayem, Greg Nemet, and Nina Aragon.
2/28/23 - This week’s stoke:
What we’re watching:
Candide Thovex Overshoots By 53 Meters - At this point, Candide should just be working for NASA. He literally goes to space every time he leaves the ground on skis. This time, he hucks himself through an arch in Tignes, France and lands a little deep. Like really deep.
Silvretta Montafon 4-Star FWT Qualifier - It seems to be happening more and more than the FWT qualifier rounds are just as rowdy as the real thing - maybe there's something to be said about putting it all on the line to make it to the big leagues. Last week, we saw a 4* event in Silvretta-Montafon with some absolutely insane skiing. Put this one on in the background at work at watch the next gen of freeriders go off. Here's just the winning runs if you don't have the time.
The Beta:
Dynafit Releases New Boot Designed by Hoji - There's quite a few new downhill performance-oriented touring boots out this year, and Dynafit just released their new Ridge Pro boot. Designed by tinkerlord Eric Hjorleifson, it takes lessons learned from the old Hoji boot and puts it all into an entirely new shred-ready package. It's 1250g. Could this be the best competitor to the new Tecnica Zero G?
Elevating the Craft:
Blister's Deep Dive on Ski Boot Flex - The Blister podcast team put out an interesting deep dive on bootfitting and how ski boot flex is affected by many different factors - including how the same boot can feel much stiffer or softer for different shapes of feet. If your curious about how ski boot flex works and how it affects your skiing, this might answer a few questions.
Sidetracked:
Skiing: A Review - This one was making the social media rounds over the last few weeks, and for good reason. The High Route's Peter Vordenberg gives an honest review of plain old skiing. It goes something like this - "The other day I was having a bad day skiing. The snow was hard and my arthritic knee hurt to a degree that made skiing a bit too painful to enjoy. And then I realized. I was skiing. Out of all the hands the deck could deal, I still got one that was skiing."
Thanks for reading and see you next week,
