Full Circle, more inbounds avalanches, world records and more ...
How do you say "Japow" in your own language? That was the biggest question on the minds of this stacked international ski crew that headed to the mountains of Japan last season.
1/31/24 - This week’s stoke:
What we’re watching:
Full Circle - Trevor Kennison - Trevor Kennison made history when he jumped into Corbet's Couloir on a sit ski - but his life and career story hasn't ever been told through a feature film format. If you've got a Netflix account (or just go steal your friends!) give this one a watch.
Candide Still Being Candide - If you haven't already please take 30 seconds out of your day and watch Candide being as smooth as ever...you won’t regret it.
The Beta:
Inbounds Avalanches in Washington and Wyoming - The weird winter for the western US continues to lead to dangerous avalanches both inbounds and in the backcountry. This week slides were reported at Mission Ridge and Stevens Pass in Washington. Luckily no one was injured in these slides. Last week an inbounds slide occurred in a prominent closed area in Jackson Hole when a skier ducked a rope.
FWT Verbier highlights + second stop canceled - After canceling the first stop of the 2024 FWT in Spain, event organizers quickly pivoted and put on an event on Verbier's Petit Bec De Rosses (adjacent to the finals venue). With nearly perfect conditions, it was one of the wildest FWT comps we've ever watched. Max Hitzig and Victor De Le Rue took the men's titles, with Zuzanna Witych and Nuria Castan Baron taking the women's titles. A few days following the event, it was announced that the second stop (also in the Pyrenees) was canceled due to a continued lack of sufficient snow cover. The next event will be the Kicking Horse Pro in a few weeks.
Elevating the Craft:
24-hour vert record smashed - Austrian ski mountaineer Jakob Herrman set a new world record for the number of vertical meters skied in 24 hours by human power. The previous record was set by Killian Jornet in 2019 at 23,864 meters. Jakob smashed the record setting the new one at 24242
Sidetracked:
Micah Evangelista Gofundme - Skier and filmmaker Micah Evangelista had a bad crash in Japan just a few days ago that left him with significant pelvic injuries. We've always been a big fan of Micah's film work like Bourn - and know that he could use some help getting home from Japan and getting back on his feet.
Thanks for reading and see you next week,
