Alpine Intel 20

Moving meditaion, flying into first descents, ma mediation on risk and more ...

The local crew 22 boys shred the Jackson Hole sidecountry in this short banger. This was all filmed on a single and showcases some classic lines

2/10/23 - This week’s stoke:

What we’re watching:

  • ÆTHER 5 - A mediation on movement and self-discovery. This short piece follows Spencer O’Brien through the mountains, with incredible cinematography and music. It contains no storyline or speaking, sit back and enjoy the art.

  • Unplanned First Descent - We've been seeing more multisport approaches in the mountains using paragliders. In this video, the crew flies to a classic line in the backyard and after taking the climbing route end up skiing it for a first descent. Instead of rappelling off the 150-meter cliff at the bottom, they fly off

The Beta:

  • Avalanche kills 1 person in Alaska - Last Tuesday 3 riders were ascending a peak in the Kenia mountains when they triggered a slide. All three were caught with 2 sustaining injuries and the third unfortunately getting killed.

  • Snow for the Northwest next week - Meteorologist Chris Tomer goes over the forecast for the following week. After not doing great with an El Nino year the next week should bring some snow to the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies.

Elevating the Craft:

  • OP-ED: Are we taking too much risk in the backcountry? - A thoughtful discussion on how risk tolerance has changed over the years with the advent of new gear and years of exposure to ski films. The author discusses thoughts many of us have had. Did that person who skied the gnarly line today know something I didn't? Am too conservative? Can we actaully manage avalanches?

Thanks for reading and see you next week,
