Alpine Intel 25

Rare pillow zones, tons of avalanches, crampon choices, and heliskiing music festivals

How do you make a notoriously spooky line even spicer? Ski over no fall zone and throw some airs in the middle. That is exactly what Teton Brown did on this classic Jackson Hole line.

4/3/24 - This week’s stoke:

What we’re watching:

  • Natural Selection Revelstoke Highlights - We usually follow skiing events but the natural selection tour is always an incredible show that combines man-made park-like features, natural hits, and powder. Watch the big names in freeride snowboarding throw down in the Revelstoke.

  • Tahoe Pillow Skiing - Josh Deiak is normally straight-lining big alpine zones. But a few days last winter he took advantage of some rarely in low elevation pillow zones around Lake Tahoe and channeled his inner BC skier. Check out these cool and rare lines

The Beta:

  • 24 people caught in avalanches in Colorado - A heavy storm cycle in Colorado created hazardous avalanche conditions. On Friday they reported that just in a few days 19 people had been caught in slides. The next day an additional 6 people were reported as captured. Luckily no one has been seriously injured

  • Large avalanche kills 3 in Zermatt - Sadly, an American teenager and two local skiers were killed when a large avalanche released on a slope they were on outside the Zermatt ski resort. According to Ski Magazine, two of the victims were located by their avalanche search devices, one was found with Recco technology, and the fourth was found via cellphone GPS tracking.

Elevating the Craft:

  • What Crampons Do you need for ski objectives? - There are lots of crampons out there, but which one should you bring on your ski objective? Well, it depends. The High Route editors dive deep into some of the better options out there - all aluminum, aluminum/steel combo, and more.

Sidetracked:

  • Heliskiing music festival? - Ever heard of Heligrass? Well it's a one-of-a-kind "music festival" up in AK dedicated to those who love to share rowdy lines with their favorite musicians. Julian Carr interviews pro skier and Rapidgrass frontman Mark Morris and String Cheese Incident mandolinist Michael Kang about their favorite ski trip of the year.
